On his 100th appearance in the Big Bash League, Glenn Maxwell produced one of his best-ever Twenty20 innings to dismantle the Hobart Hurricanes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and sign off a disappointing Melbourne Stars season on a high.
About Maxwell’s New Record
The mercurial Aussie, feared around the world for his ability to dismantle attacks, hit 22 4s and four 6s in a blistering knock to help his side to 273-2 – a new franchise record for the most runs scored in a single innings and only five runs short of the world record, set by Afghanistan against Ireland.
The skipper lost the toss, but would have been pleasantly surprised to learn they would be batting first on what was one of the truest wickets we have seen in the BBL this season. He led from the front – sharing a 97-run opening partnership with Joe Clarke. His next partner – Nick Larkin – scored just three runs, but departed at 141-2, epitomising the total control Maxwell had over proceedings.
Despite the delirium surrounding his innings, there will be some Stars fans who will be wondering where this kind of dominance has been throughout the campaign. A second consecutive season outside of the finals placings is nowhere near good enough for a side containing the sort of talent they have.
What Is The Previous Individual Big Bash League Highest Score?
Online cricket betting enthusiasts may be interested to learn that Maxwell broke the previous record set by Marcus Stoinis – who was his batting partner on Wednesday as he waved his wand of destruction. Stoinis’ previous record was the 147 runs he hit against the Sydney Sixers – also at the MCG.
The Stars powerhouse was also in fine form on Wednesday – hitting 75 runs from just 31 balls, including four 4s and six 6s at a strike rate of 241.94.
It felt apt his teammate would be out there in the middle with Maxwell as he made history.
