Beyond the obvious in that they’ve been excellent and CSK really poor all season, there are further reasons why the Titans are the call and I’ll talk you through them.

Recommended Bet: Back GT to win @ 1.72 with Betway

If someone had told you that Gujarat were 1.72 favourites to beat the great CSK in their first-ever season, not many would have believed you.

But it’s not that surprising.

Here we’ve got a side in Gujarat who has won nine out of their 12 games, is top of he table and has the best bowling line-up of the competition, as we’ve said many times before. They’ve won convincingly and on other occasions found ways to win out of nowhere.

CSK have been really poor.

It hasn’t helped they had injuries to Deepak Chahar before the tournament started, Adam Milne after just a couple of games and now Ravindra Jadeja.

But even aside from that, they just haven’t played good cricket for the most part and as discussed below, they’ll admit the whole Jadeja captaincy thing was a big mistake.

So CSK may surprise us and out in a huge performance against the table-toppers but I can’t see it happening.

CSK vs GT Hot Bet

One of the reasons why CSK struggled this season is that Moeen Ali had a really quiet tournament after being one of the stand-out players in 2021, when CSK won it.

He took wickets, he fielded well and though he didn’t score a mountain of runs, he certainly scored them very quickly.

Quite why Ali has struggled is debatable but last time he batted at three and out of form or not, he carries on being a class act who can come good on any given day.

Either way, it’s always about betting odds and odds of 6.79 are just too big.

Chennai Super Kings’ Recent Form

CSK saved what was by far their worst performance of the season for their match against old rivals Mumbai.

It was one of those innings with the bat where everything that could have gone wrong, did.

LBW appeals from Mumbai were all upheld, every edge went to hand and all in all it was a disaster, the Super Kings eventually dismissed for just 97.

The whole thing was epitomised by the fact that in trying to run a bye to get MS Dhoni on strike, the last wicket fell thanks to an excellent throw from the Mumbai keeper Ishan Kishan that was bang on target.

Dhoni was the best of a bad bunch with a patient 36 off 33, with 12 from Dwayne Bravo the next highest score.

But credit to CSK for at least making a game of it when bowling.

At one stage they had the Indians in a spot of bother at five down but it was such a small total that it would have taken a minor miracle to defend it.

Mukesh Choudhary was excellent with 3/23.

Team News

(Ex) Skipper Ravindra Jadeja picked up an injury the match before that one and will now miss the remainder of the tournament.

Given how badly out of form he’s been, mostly as a result of the burden of captaincy for the first half of the tournament, and you can argue it’s a lot less of a loss than it would have been in previous seasons.

Given it’s impossible for them to make the Playoffs now and they may give a game to a couple of players who haven’t featured yet. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Player to Watch: MS Dhoni

Dhoni really is one of a kind.

You don’t get that many wicket-keeper batsmen who are captains anymore and of those, few, if any, are in his class in terms of leadership.

He’s seen it all before and the one thing you can be sure of is that this is a man who never loses his cool, even under the utmost pressure.

He’d be the first to admit he made a mistake not only in giving up the captaincy this season but also appointing Jadeja as his successor.

That’s water under the bridge now but the truth is even when losing, CSK looked a better isde just because he was in charge.

My gut feel is he’ll come back next season but call it quits at the end of the 2023 season.

Gujarat Titans’ Recent Form

Gujarat have just been a winning machine.

Just when they were finally going through a rough patch with two straight losses, they recovered and went on to beat Lucknow, which if the table is anything to go by, are the second-best team (after them) in the competition.

Shubman Gill’s measured 63 off 49 proved invaluable on an extremely tricky pitch in a game where no other batsman from either side could get going.

With the ball and defending 145, Rashid Khan was superb with figures of 4-24 and Mohammed Shami absolutely miserly with his three overs going for just five runs.

In the end it was Gill who was man-of-the-match but Khan or Shami would have been extremely worthy winners, as well.

If they go on to win it in their debut season, they will have deserved it.

Team News

Last time out they went to battle without Lockie Ferguson, which was pretty surprising.

He didn’t seem to be injured, so he was either rested or they decided that they were better off going with the extra overseas batsman, who in this case was Matthew Wade.

Wade scored 10 off seven which was ok, but the Aussie keeper-batsman just hasn’t got going this campaign and I’d be surprised if he plays again this season.

Having said that, the Titans now have a Top 2 finish secured so if they wished to make some changes to give players a rest, they can do so. Though losing a couple of matches going into the Playoffs is never a good thing.

Ferguson should feature here again.

Player to Watch: Rashid Khan

The theory over the last couple of years is that Rashid Khan has played so much franchise cricket that batsmen can read him better than before and that they can play him better.

An alternative theory is that he’s so good that they don’t try to score off him as much as other bowlers and just look to not get out against him.

The second theory may be more on the money.

It does seem players are less likely to take him on and an economy rate of 6.79 is the best of any bowler in the Top 15 for most wickets.

But that doesn’t tell the full story because he’s also claimed 15 wickets along the way and to take it a step further, twice played extremely important knocks with the bat.

It’s no surprise he’s the 3.6 favourite to be Titans’ top bowler but he’s also 12.0 for man of the match, which remarkably means he’s only the 12th favourite. Odds with Betway.

That’s a big price for a player of his ability.

Venue & conditions

It was at the Wankhede Stadium that CSK were all out for 97 and where Mumbai struggled a bit to get to that total.

It would suggest this is a minefield of a wicket but that’s certainly not normally the case. Generally the Wankhede is one of the highest-scoring grounds in India.

And that’s backed up by the first innings scores before that match on Thursday where teams were regularly getting to 190 or so.

This is one of the grounds where it’s not necessarily always best to bat first, or chase. It really does depend on the conditions on the day.
