The league leaders are continuing their relentless march towards the top spot and the right to hold the Big Bash League final at their home ground, the Optus Stadium. They have gone four years without tasting glory and came mighty close last year – finishing runner-up. Is this the year they get back on the podium?

It has been a devastating 10 days for the Stars – they were robbed of some of their brightest stars by a Covid-19 outbreak, which meant they had to call up local replacement players for two crucial clashes, both of which they lost.

They managed to scrape home against the Strikers last time out. thanks to returning players such as Joe Clarke and Joe Burns.

Scorchers Recent Form

It hasn’t been all sunshine and lollipops for the Scorchers of late – they were hammered by the Sydney Thunder in their penultimate match and squeaked home against the Sixers thanks to an enterprising knock from Ashton Turner.

They continue to showcase elite balance between bat and ball – they bat with depth and when one player fails, another is ready to step into their shoes. I’ve been really impressed by their bowling unit this season – they have only conceded a score above 160 once in their last six matches.

I can see them continuing their run of fine form against a Stars side beset by injuries and concerns over form of skipper and leading light Glenn Maxwell.

There was come bad news for franchise fans before the victory over the Sixers – popular New Zealand batter Colin Munro tested positive for Covid-19, which means he will miss out on some key matches over the final few games.

As always with these types of cases, Munro also takes down Jason Beherendoff, who was deemed as a close contact and must self-isolate as a result.

Player to Watch: Ashton Turner

It was hardly surprising to see Turner dig his side out of a hole. The 28-year-old batter is immensely talented – introducing himself to the world in 2019 for Australia against India with 84 not out from 43 balls.

He could be one to watch – particularly if he has comin into some form.

I don’t want to make too many excuses for the Stars – but they have had to deal with more than most in this season’s Big Bash League.

The Stars were forced to name six local replacement players last week against the Scorchers – with World Cup-winning stars Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis, and other experienced pros such as Nathan Coulter-Nile and Joe Burns, all missing out.

Despite fighting valiantly, the drop-off in class was evident, and the Stars were bottom of the table after losing four games in five.

An absolutely massive result against the Adelaide Strikers on Monday means they are in with a fighting chance to land an eliminator position.

Glenn Maxwell looks set to miss out again after testing positive for Covid-19 – he will continue to see out his isolation period.

Peter Nevill is no longer with the Stars – returning to NSW before their victory over the Adelaide Strikers. His place in the squad goes to Patrick Rowe.

Player to Watch: Adam Zampa

A genuine world-class talent, Zampa takes over the captaincy role in place of the injured Glenn Maxwell.

A clever spinner who is yet to get going this season – what with injuries and the Covid-19 outbreak. He has six wickets from six games this year, but he’s much better than those figures suggest.
