Sydney Thunder’s Recent Form

It’s been a good campaign for the Thunder. They’ve lost players to Covid and international call-ups, but got on with the job in hand. The reward for their consistency and determination has been a guaranteed Playoff spot and they may even manage better than that.

Tied on 31 points, they could finish Top 2 if they better what cross-city rivals the Sixers manage in their last game. So if they won and got a Bash bonus point while the Sixers won but didn’t get it, they’d leapfrog the Sixers into second place.

So lots to play for.

Team News

Big news!

With the Ashes over, Usman Khawaja, who didn’t play a game for them all season, is finally available.

He’ll captain the side as well, after Chris Green did such a good job in his place.

Khawaja will either open or bat at thee but in all likelihood, he’ll join Alex Hales at the top of the order.

Player to Watch: Usman Khawaja

A real player’s player.

His elegant, languid style can be a joy to watch and he showed his true class by being man of the match after hitting twin centuries in the drawn Fourth Test.

But in addition to a strong Big bash record, he’s an excellent captain. Good cricketing brain, calm, relaxed and inspirational.

He’ll be delighted to be back in action for his beloved team

Thunder’s Likely XI

Khawaja, Hales, Sangha, Gilkes, Davies, Sams, Cutting, Green, McAndrew, Sandhu, Tanveer Sangha.

Melbourne Renegades’ Recent Form

The Renegades’ loss to the Hurricanes sums up their season. Having got themselves into an excellent position to win the game thanks to fine knocks from Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh in a tough chase, they should have won.

But they didn’t. Marsh got out at just the wrong time and with Finch then put under pressure, he got out as well. With too much left to do in the last over, they ended up losing by six runs. It’s been that sort of season.

If they can better the Heat’s result, they won’t finish bottom. That’s all they have to play for.

Team News

With no players coming back from Ashes duty, there aren’t any reinforcements for this final match of the season.

Unmukt Chand, who had to wait till the 11th game of the season to finally make his debut, didn’t have the greatest of games.

He came in at four, scored just six off eight when they needed someone to get them home. And then got out. Fair to say this has been a bitterly disappointing season for him.

But he’ll probably play this last match.

Nic Maddinson (injury), McKenzie Harvey and Jake Fraser-McGurk (Covid) are all likely to miss out again.

Player to Watch: Shaun Marsh

Things may have been a little different if they’d had Marsh all season.

After coming into the franchise on big money last season from the Scorchers, he missed the first five games of this season.

In the six he played, he scored two fifties at a very impressive strike rate of 133 and averaged 30.

Let’s wait and see if he and Aaron Finch are around to at least provide  the Renegades with a strong top order next season.

It’s 4.55 he top scores here, with 10CRIC.

Renegades’ Likely XI

Seymour, Finch, Marsh, Chand, Merlo, Harper, Sutherland, Boyce, Evans, Lalor, Khan.

Venue & conditions

The famous MCG is a ground we know well.

There have been some pretty low scores here batting first over the past few matches. But that had a lot more to do with poor batting efforts than it did anything else.

How do we know that? Because of how easily those scores were chased.

149, 139 and 139 was no problem for the side batting second; on two occasions that was the Stars. Meaning those results also suggest that batting second is the way to go.

But it’s a better wicket than those scores suggest and the Thunder could easily get to 175 if they bat first.

Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Head-to-Head

Let’s look at the Thunder v Renegades head-to-head. That the Renegades are 9-5 ahead is a big surprise. Because it’s a big surprise the Renegades have a positive head-to-head record against anyone.

Earlier on in the season, the Thunder posted 209. The Renegades were all out for just 80.

Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Toss Prediction

Time to look at the Thunder v Renegades toss winner statistics. The Renegades have a strong record in this regard, as well. As you can see, a 64% toss win rate is very high. Let’s go with the Renegades to improve on that record further.

Toss chart for Renegades vs Thunder betting predictions article

TEAMS TOSS WIN %
Renegades 9 64.29%
Thunder 5 35.71%

Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Winner Prediction

Recommended Bet: Back the Thunder to win @ 1.43 with Pure Win

Finch and Marsh were going so well that all they had to do to get home was rotate the strike and not get out. They got out. Both. In quick succession.

What that tells you is there’s little else in the side in terms of batting beyond them, especially with Maddinson unlikely to play. That has been just one of many problems for them this season.

I suppose that with the advantage there is in batting second here at the MCG, you could make a case for the Renegades in Live Bet if they chase and it’s not a monster score.

But the Thunder have been excellent and the Renegades awful.

Sometimes it’s not worth overcomplicating things. The Thunder it is, albeit at a short price.

Today’s Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Hot Bet

Recommended Bet: Back Nathan McAndrew to be Thunder top bowler @ 9.93 with 10 CRIC

Nathan McAndrew isn’t the top wicket-taker for the Thunder. He has 12 wickets in 12 games, making him only their fourth highest wicket-taker.

And his strike rate isn’t among the best, either, compared to some of his team-mates. But here’s something to consider. No-one in the team has bowled more than his 41 overs, which suggests he gives you every chance.

He’s consistent and more to the point, he’s available at really big odds of 9.93. And those are reasons enough to back him.

Thunder vs Renegades fun statistics

Time to round things off with some fun facts ahead of the game.

  • No-one has scored more than two fifties this season for the Thunder. But interestingly, five players have scored exactly two fifties: Billings, Gilkes, Sangha, Hales and Ross.
  • Matthew Gilkes is averaging 22 and has faced 222 balls in this BBL.
  • He may be well off the team’s top scorers but no-one has hit more sixes than Daniel Sams’ 16.
