Sydney Thunder’s Recent Form

The Thunder are very much, alongside the Scorchers, the BBL’s in-form side.

The run allowed them to leapfrog the Sixers into second place and they’re now favourites to secure that all-important Top 2 finish, alongside the Scorchers.

Last time out they restricted the Hurricanes to just 139 with the in-form Gurinder Sandhu and Nathan McAndrew both claiming two wickets, before Alex Hales made a mockery of the total by hitting an unbeaten 80.

The improved form of Hales is extremely important. An aggressive and in-form opening batsman is key to a team’s success and after an extremely slow start to the season, he’s finally finding his groove.

Jason Sangha was also good in hitting an unbeaten 35 off 31; he was also skipper in the absence of Chris Green.

Hobart Hurricanes’ Recent Form

It’s a good thing the Hurricanes went on a three-match winning streak because they haven’t been good since then.

They’ve now lost three of their last four and that last loss was against today’s opponents.

It’s not hard to see what the main problem is: they’re far too reliant on Ben McDermott. When he’s fired, they’ve won games. When he hasn’t, the others haven’t stood up at all.

One of those is skipper Matthew Wade, who was admittedly absent last time out for personal reasons.

What’s really odd is their decision to play D’Arcy Short down the order. He’s batted as an opener pretty much throughout his whole BBL career so why play him at 3, 4 or 5 now?

As for Jordan Thompson and Harry Brook, English imports, they’ve both contributed very little so far.

Venue & conditions

It’s really not easy to know what to expect at the SCG because quite frankly, first innings scores have been all over the place.

There have been big ones like the 195/1 the Scorchers for against the Strikers and very small ones like the 105 all out posted by the Heat. There have also been rain-reduced affairs.

But 170 has been about par over the years on what is generally a decent wicket, so that’s what both sides will see as a target if batting first.

1.55 is borderline in terms of the sort of price you want to be backing a team in a game of T20.

As we often say, one stand-out performance from one player with either bat or ball can completely change the game on its head.

But in this case, we simply have to take those odds on the Thunder.

It’s extremely hard for anyone to win seven in a row in T20 but the fact they’ve won six already is a testament to just how well they’ve been playing.

There have been contributions from just about everyone recently including Hales, Sangha, Gilkes, Sams and Sandhu. Another good sign of a really strong team when it’s not just one player doing the business.

As for the Hurricanes, McDermott aside, who would get into this Thunder side? No-one really.

And that tells its own story.  Injuries, players away on international duty, Covid and loss of form to important players have all come at just the wrong time.

Add the fact the Thunder are at home and won this same fixture just a few days ago and you can see why we simply have to go with the Sydney side.

I don’t think I need to go into too much detail here about Sams because he was my ‘Player to watch’ from among the Thunder’s players.

But in a nutshell: he could easily turn the game with either bat or ball.

The absence of Sam Billings has meant he’s been batting a spot higher than usual, sometimes two, and after that amazing 98 the other day he’ll surely bat no lower than five from now.

And of course, he’s also their leading wicket-taker so two or three wickets may see him win the MOM award that way.

He ticks all the boxes and I think the Thunder will win so that’s why he’s my man at 9.0.
