Delhi Capitals Best Odds

The best IPL betting sites have the Delhi Capitals at 6.0 to go and do what they’ve never done before and be crowned IPL champions. The price makes them the second-favourites after the Mumbai Indians.

In truth, the odds look about right. They’’ll have one of the most powerful and classiest top orders at the tournament and have plenty of variety when it comes to their bowling attack. In Pant, they have a sort of MS Dhoni 2.0, who keeps wicket, captains the team and plays a crucial role in that middle-order.

But what they don’t have is the experience of winning tight matches at the business end of the tournament and that has to be a concern. Is this the season where that changes?

Has Delhi Capitals won the IPL before?

No. They actually started off decently, making the semis in the first two editions of the IPL. That was a strong-looking squad back then featuring the hard-hitting Virender Sehwag, the prolific Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik and the inimitable AB de Villiers in their batting line-up. With the ball, Kiwi spinner Daniel Vettori and Ashish Nehra were their main men.

In 2008 they never had a chance in the semis after conceding 192 against the eventual winners the Rajasthan Royals and the following year, their 153 was never going to be enough against the Deccan Chargers, who also went on to win the league that season.

In 2012 they actually topped the group stages with star batters David Warner and Kevin Pietersen added to the roster. They, unfortunately, lost both chances to make the final; by 18 runs to Kolkata Knight Riders and then by a massive 86 runs against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings.

In 2020 they finally made their first-ever final after a strong campaign throughout. They beat Sunrisers Hyderabad to book their place in the final but ultimately posted a sub-par score against an excellent Mumbai side, who chased their score with relative ease.

DC Performance 2021

The Capitals will be really disappointed at how the 2021 season turned out for them.

They did all the hard work by topping the Group Stages, giving themselves two chances at making the final.

In the Qualifier 1 they posted a pretty decent-looking 172-5 against CSK, only for Ruturaj Gaikwad (70) and Robin Uthappa (63) to play beautifully, getting Chennai home with two balls to spare. MS Dhoni played his part too with a quickfire 18 off just six balls to seal the deal.

When It came to their second chance to qualify for the final, this time against KKR, it was a very different sort of game.

In a low-scoring game on a tricky pitch, Shikhar Dhawan (35) helped Delhi to a total of just 135-5, with KKR almost making a mess of chasing it, getting there with just one ball to spare.

Kolkata’s Rahul Tripathi hit the penultimate ball of the match for six to win it for KKR after an excellent fightback with the ball from Delhi, who were left to rue the fact they posted such a low total.

Veteran Dhawan was his usual consistent self with 587 runs for the season, while Avesh Khan was a revelation with 24 wickets in 16 matches.

DC Performance 2020

They finished second in the Group Stages after particularly impressive performances from Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer.

They then lost Qualifier 1 against Mumbai Indians, beat Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 but were well beaten in the final, despite a good knock from Iyer. Again, it was Mumbai who caused their downfall.

Rabada was the top IPL wicket-taker, Dhawan the IPL’s second-highest runscorer.

DC Performance 2019

Much better than previous years.

After six seasons of not making the Play-Offs including three years of finishing rock bottom, they put in a decent effort in the Group Stages to finish third.

Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer all had stellar seasons with the bat while South African duo Kasigo Rabada and Chris Morris, plus India internationals Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra, were among those putting in impressive performances with the ball.

The big problem was that their best bowler of all – Rabada – got injured before the Play-Offs. They still managed to knock out Hyderabad in the Eliminator but in their second must-win game against Chennai in the Qualifier 2, their 147 was well below par and Chennai chased it pretty comfortably.

Crown to represent the Casptain of DC

Captain: Rishabh Pant

He’s the first-choice wicket-keeper batsman for India at the moment in all formats and very much the batsman the team turns to when it comes to doing something remarkable. So explosive and brilliant is his batting that he often comes in at three, four or five, rather than down at six or seven (the traditional places for a keeper to bat), for India.

He certainly thinks nothing of hitting the first ball he faces for six, if necessary. A strike rate of 156 in domestic T20 cricket tells you all you need to know about how dangerous he can be.

He’s also a very capable keeper and has a good cricketing brain about him.

He was given the captaincy when Shreyas Iyer was ruled out for most of the 2021 season and kept it even after Iyer came back. When Pant was then retained by Delhi and Iyer wasn’t, Pant then kept the captaincy on a full-time basis.

Trophy to represent the Gun player at DC

Gun player: Mitch Marsh

We always knew the talent ability was there but it’s only really been the last year where we’ve seen just how good Marsh can be as a T20 batsman.

He was excellent for Australia before the World Cup in his new position at number three, was man-of-the-match for Australia in the final as they won the World Cup and then put in some superb performances for the Perth Scorchers, winning the Big Bash with them as well in early 2022.

Given he also bowls and can be very effective on his day with the ball and you can see how crucial he is, the only slight concern being that he hasn’t always been at his best in Indian conditions.

Medal to represent Promising youngster at DC

Promising Youngster: Prithvi Shaw

It’s easy to forget that Prithvi Shaw is still only 22. He’s already played for India in all formats and still holds the record for being the youngest Indian to score a century on Test debut.

After a quiet 2020, he had a good year in 2021, finishing as the team’s second highest run scorer after Shikhar Dhawan with 479 runs, which included four fifties in 15 matches and two man-of-the-match awards.

But more than the runs, it was his strike rate which was remarkable: 159. Just the sort of fast starts that a team needs.

Delhi Capitals team analysis

A look at their likely line up shows you they have everything. Warner and Shaw are fast-starters with the bat, Marsh and Pant two of the world’s best T20 middle-order batsmen, Patel and Yadav are fine operators as spinners, Mustafizur Rahman a real T20 specialist death bowler and Ngidi a prolific wicket-taker.

In Shardul Thakur they have a man who can perform an extremely important role in T20 these days: a wicket-taking bowler who can smash boundaries at the death with the bat.

And in Pant they really have the ace in the pack as a three-dimensional cricketer who simply can’t be replaced.

But there may just be a fly in the ointment. Having retained Anrich Nortje ahead of Kagiso Rabada at the end of the 2021 season after Nortje’s superb season where his economy rate was just above 6, they may have been left ruing that decision.

Not that it was Nortje’s fault.

But Nortje has been injured since the World Cup and will miss some, or all, of this year’s IPL.

So Delhi now have the option to play another batter in Rovman Powell or use that fourth overseas spot for Lungi Ngidi, instead. Ngidi has a superb strike rate in the IPL but his economy rate is close to 10, while Nortje’s has been close to 6; big difference.

Whichever way they go, Notje is a big loss but other than that, they’re looking very good.
