Punjab Kings Betting
Punjab Kings are one of the IPL’s least successful sides with just one final to show for their efforts.
And it’s been a few years since they even made the Playoffs. After that excellent campaign in 2014 when they topped the Group Stages and lost in the final, they haven’t made a single Playoff appearance since.
In 2015 and 2016 they ended rock bottom and things haven’t been much better since.
So in many ways, they would have been one of the teams most in favour of the big changes in the IPL that saw sides allowed to retain a maximum of four players.
Perhaps a reset and the need for sides to start pretty much from scratch plays exactly into their hands and could give theme their best chance of success in years.
The best cricket betting sites will have taken note of the fact they did some good business in the IPL auction and look considerably better prepared than in previous editions

Punjab Kings best odds
Websites that allow placing bets online for the IPL have the PBKS at 7.0 to win the IPL.
That’s the shortest price they’ve been in a long, long time for IPL success and reflects how strong their squad looks at last after years of fielding mediocre teams.
But turning a struggling team into one capable of winning the IPL is easier said than done and there’s more to it than just bringing in high quality new players.
Whether the management and Head Coach Anil Kumble can turn this group of talented and exciting players into a well-drilled machine that consistently wins tight games, remains to be seen.
They’ll also need to perform under a new captain with KL Rahul gone and last year’s vice-captain Mayank Agarwal taking over.
This will be a new challenge for Agarwal and we’ll have to wait at least one season to see if he was the right man for the job.
But they certainly have the players, especially in the batting department, to be very dangerous.

Has PBKS won the IPL before?
Nope. The Kings are yet to taste IPL glory and have only ever made one final.
That was back in 2014 when they even topped the Group Stages, winning 11 out of 14 matches and boasting an extremely impressive net run rate of 0.968, proof that not only did they win lots of matches but a lot of them were pretty comfortable, as well.
They lost the Qualifier 1 against Kolkata Knight Riders but made the most of their second bite of the cherry by beating Chennai in Qualifier 2.
There was nothing wrong with the score of 199 they posted in the final but Kolkata’s batters were just too good on the day, chasing that with three balls to spare.
Their only other Play-off appearance was in 2008, when they put in a shocker in the semi-final against Chennai Super Kings, posting a paltry 112, which was understandably chased by the Super Kings without breaking a sweat.
PBKS Performance 2021
2021 was another season of struggle for the Punjab Kings.
They ended the season in sixth place with just Rajasthan and (surprisingly) SRH below them.
Though they won their first game of the season, a high-scoring game against the Royals, they then lost their next three and were up against it ever since. They never managed to put a winning run together as they struggled to find their best XI.
A big part of the problem was their batting.
KL Rahul was superb as per usual with 626 runs at an average of 62 and Mayank Agarwal did his bit too with 327 runs from just eight matches.
But all of Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda never got going and it was often left to Rahul to fight a one-man battle.
And it was a similar story with the ball. Mohammad Shami, another extremely reliable player, was excellent with 19 wickets, as was Arshdeep Singh with 18 in just nine games, part of the reason why he was retained.
But Aussie pair Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith seriously struggled and too many changes top the side led to further disruptions, as they fell short once again.
PBKS performance 2020
It was nothing if not an interesting season for the Punjab Kings last time out. They lost their first match in a Super Over to the Delhi Capitals, won their second against RCB but then went on a horrid run.
During this period they lost five consecutive games, mostly due to poor bowling. To be fair to them, they then won five in a row to give themselves a fighting chance of somehow making the Playoffs against all odds. But they didn’t quite pull it off, losing their last two to Rajasthan Royals and Chennai and ending up on 12 points in sixth place.
KL Rahul was brilliant, top-scoring in the whole IPL with 670 runs despite playing two games fewer than plenty of other players. Chris Gayle was also excellent, after sitting out a few matches at the start.
Glenn Maxwell on the other hand was hugely disappointing. He had a horrid season and it was no surprise when they released him at the end of the campaign.
PBKS performance 2019
They performed poorly. Another typical season of under-achievement, where they finished sixth out of eight, winning six matches out of 14 and missing out on the Play-Offs yet again.
KL Rahul and somewhat surprisingly Chris Gayle, had excellent seasons with the bat that included the India international scoring a century and Gayle ending up stranded on 99 not out in one game. But that was as good as it got.

Captain: Mayank Agarwal
It was a bit of a surprise that having only chosen to retain two players ahead of the 2022 season and with KL Rahul not one of them (he opted not to be retained and to try his fortunes elsewhere), the Kings went with Agarwal as one of the two.
After all, whereas Agarwal is a perfectly competent performer in the IPL, he’s not quite a superstar.
Just as an example, over the last few seasons he scored 332, 424 and 441 runs respectively. Rahul, in contrast, scored 593, 670 and 626 over the same time period.
But then again, Rahul is arguably the IPL’s best batsman so it may be a bit unfair to compare Agarwal to him.
Still, now 31, Agarwal seems to be getting better in this competition year on year and his strike rate of 141, 156 and 140 over the past three seasons is highly impressive, especially for a player largely seen as a Test match specialist.
And he knows the team, well so was an obvious choice to take over as skipper.
Gun player: Liam Livingstone
If someone had told you that Livingstone was going to be the most expensive overseas signing at the auction, you probably wouldn’t have believed them.
After all, he didn’t play much last season and has only recently become a regular in England’s T20I side.
But he’s made a big impact over the past two years with impressive performances in the Big Bash and he was Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition of The Hundred with some monstrous hits and whirlwind cameos with the bat.
This is a man with a career strike rate of 158 in T20Is and 144 in domestic T20 with one international T20 century and two domestic ones to his name.
Expect him to bat at four and bowl his assortment of off and leg breaks as and when Punjab need him.
Promising youngster: Rahul Chahar
Sometimes the best thing a player can be is consistent and 22 -year old Chahar is a good example of that.
Over the past three seasons at Mumbai, he took 13, 15 and 13 wickets a season and his economy rate was 6.55, 8.16 and 7.39 over the past three campaigns.
So he’s not a world-beater but he always makes a solid contribution and is a part of the long list of Indian spinners trying to book their ticket on the plane to the 2022 T20 World Cup.
He’ll have a big role to play with no other frontline spinner in the side.
Punjab Kings Team Analysis
They’ve certainly got a brilliant batting line-up, full of power and international experience.
That Top 6 will be as good as anything you’ll find in the IPL although if you wanted to be really critical, you may argue that Numbers 3 and 4 Bairstow and Livingstone would rather open the batting than play in the middle-order.
But that’s splitting hairs and they’ll all know their roles.
By fielding Odeon Smith and Liam Livingstone, they’ll also have two more options with the ball which could come in handy, because they look a frontline pace bowler light.
So they’re mostly a batting-heavy side who will probably look to chase in most games.
But if Rabada, Chahar and Singh can do their bit with the ball with others chipping in, they’ll be a match for anyone.
They also have a good coach on board with former India skipper and Head Coach Anil Kumble in charge.
